Norfolk
Botanical Garden (NBG) celebrates its 75th Anniversary
with a touch of glass – Craig Mitchell Smith
glass artist that is! The Garden will open its
summer exhibit on Wednesday May 1, 2013 entitled
Reflections of Nature that will incorporate 30
glass sculptures inspired by nature designed and
created by Smith exclusively for the NBG.
Virginia
Symphony Orchestra receives National Endowment
for the Arts grant to support Statewide Tour.
National
Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Acting Chairman Joan
Shigekawa announced that Virginia Symphony is
one of 817 nonprofit organizations nationwide
to receive an NEA Art Works grant.
Congrats
to Myles Golden, the 2013 Hampton Roads Student
Gallery First Place Winner.

Golden was the first prize winner of the 2013
Hampton Roads Student Gallery winning $500.00.

Hardy received the Equality Virginia Award at
the 2012 EV Legend Gala.
Equality
Virginia (EV) honored Carlton Hardy and as the
2012 EV Legend at its 7th annual “Legend
Gala”. Carlton joins past honorees Cynthia
Cutler, Claus Ihleman, Laurel Quarberg and Sarah
Munford, Senator Yvonne Miller, Bill Griggs and
Ann Dearsley Vernon as exemplars in the continued
fight for equality for all Virginians.

Director Departs Hermitage Museum & Gardens
After
serving as Executive Director of the Hermitage
Museum & Gardens in Norfolk, VA since 2004,
Melanie Leigh Mathewes has accepted the position
of Chief Executive Officer for the National Sporting
Library & Museum in Middleburg, VA.
As a supporter of VSC, you can participate in
our mission to "enrich, educate and entertain
the region by creating and producing theatrical
art of the highest quality and worthy of national
prominence."

Fine Arts Center Announces Biennial 2012 Winners
Artist
awards for Peninsula Fine Arts Center’s
Biennial 2012 were announced by juror David Mickenberg,
the Senior Curator and Executive Director of the
Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, VA on July 20
at a Pfac members opening reception. Biennial
2012 continues through October 7, 2012 at Pfac.
The
Virginia Symphony is pleased to announce that
its administrative offices will be moving to downtown
Norfolk the week of August 20, 2012. The orchestra,
which serves the entire Hampton Roads region,
is headquartered in Norfolk. "We are excited
to be moving our headquarters to downtown Norfolk,”
stated VSO Board Chair Jane Short.

W. Olney Rd. in Norfolk. They're open Tuesday
through Friday from 10:00 am till 6:00 pm, Saturday
from 11:00 am to 6:00pm, and Sunday from 12:00

Two
Hampton Roads Leaders Named to Virginia Symphony
Board: LifeNet President Rony Thomas Named Chair-Elect
On
Thursday June 7, 2012, the Virginia Symphony Board
of Directors voted on and approved a slate of
new members and officers. Effective July 1, 2012,
two Hampton Roads leaders will begin three-year
terms on the Orchestra’s board
and one current member will take on a leadership
role.

Senate's
budget calls for budget restorations to the Virginia
Commission for the Arts.
The
House and Senate Money Committees met this afternoon
to adopt amendments to the Governor's proposed
budget for FY13-14 and the caboose budget for

The
Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads is
pleased to announce that Joan L. Rhodes-Copeland
has been named the new Executive Director. Joan
replaces Patricia Rublein who retired recently
from this position.

was the Cultural Alliance of Hampton Roads started?
The
Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads was
formed in 1983 by the merger of the Peninsula
Council of the Arts and the Metropolitan Arts
Congress to carry out the programs and recommendations
of the Greater Hampton Roads Cultural Action
Plan.
