Created by Hampton City Council in 1987, the commission is charged with the promotion and development of artistic and cultural programs in the City of Hampton, and with providing a coordinated method of city support of cultural organizations. Based in the historic Charles H. Taylor Center, the commission has presented the highly acclaimed Great Performers Series for the past ten sessions and also publishes Diversions, a bi-monthly arts magazine. A nonprofit arm of The Hampton Arts Commission and also based in the Charles H. Taylor Center, the foundation, along with the City of Hampton, is the owner of The American Theatre in Phoebus, scheduled to open in April 2000. The theatre will support performing arts organizations and outreach programs including Hampton's Great Performers Series, and will provide opportunities for master classes, artists residencies, and educational programs. Also, planned; film festivals, cabaret evenings, jazz series, and animation screenings for children.
