The museum is closed on New Years Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The Casemate Museum is the Army's Coast Artillery Museum and exhibits Fort Monroe's role in the Civil War. Casemate, meaning "room within the wall of the fort," was once used as living quarters for soldiers and is still surrounded by a moat. Admission is free and the facility is handicapped accessible. The Museum is closed New Years Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Guided tours for pre-formed groups of 10 or more (school groups grade 3 and above) are available with a two-week notice.
