The Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library, Inc. (FOPPL) is a support organization founded in 1974 with just seventy-five members. Our current membership, in excess of 400, includes interested citizens, children, authors, and educators- individuals from all walks of life. FOPPL is staffed solely by volunteers and raises money to purchase library equipment and materials. We support library legislation on the state level. FOPPL holds monthly book sales, seeking community donations for support. Book sales are held at the main library, 601 Court Street, Portsmouth, the second full weekend of every month- Friday 3-6 PM and Saturday 10 AM - 4 PM. FOPPL also holds quarterly meetings where their continuing Virginia Author series provides local and other Virginia authors an opportunity to discuss their most recent book with FOPPL members and guests. Open to the public.
