The academy is a community music school serving Hampton Roads, located in Ghent, an historic neighborhood in Norfolk. Music instruction is available for pre-schoolers, children and adults, in a variety of instruments and voice. All school-age children, regardless of their private study area, are required to participate in a weekly musicianship class encompassing solfegg, rhythmic movement, aural skills, and ensemble. Performance ensembles include flute, string, percussion, and brass instruments. Specialized performance ensembles include Hampton Roads Chamber Players (an auditioned chamber music ensemble) and The Young Razzcals Jazz Ensemble. Since its beginning in 1991, the school has grown to 35 faculty members serving approximately 950. Need-based scholarships are available for all students. Summer programs include pre-school and school-age music camps, string ensemble, percussion and advanced chamber music. Outreach programs include an exportable pre-school program, public school string program, band program, African/Latin drum program, Girl Scout badge program and elder care center program. Academy students have been featured in performances throughout the community, including elder care centers, pre-symphony concerts at Chrysler Hall, Virginia Wesleyan College, Christopher Newport University, Virginia Beach Public Library, and the Contemporary Arts Center of Virginia. The Academy seeks relationships with other arts organizations as well as public and private schools.
